If you’re planning a Walt Disney World trip this spring or summer, Magic Kingdom is worth a very close look right now. Two major attractions have just reopened or are about to, and Annual Passholders have a stacked dining discount window coming this summer. Here’s everything you need to know about the biggest Magic Kingdom ride updates of 2026.
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Gets a Major Overhaul
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin in Tomorrowland reopened on April 8, 2026 with sweeping changes to nearly every element of the ride, from the vehicles to the blasters to the way the game actually scores.
What’s New
The most noticeable addition is Buddy, a new Pixar-created support robot who appears in a pre-mission sequence before gameplay begins. She walks riders through target practice, which both sets the story and gives first-timers a warm-up round before the points start counting.
The Star Cruiser vehicles have been fully refurbished and now include onboard video monitors showing real-time scoring as you ride. Each vehicle also carries a new handheld blaster. The blasters feature an always-on laser, clearer dual-color sighting, and haptic vibration and sound feedback when you land a hit. No more guessing whether you’re connecting.
The targets themselves have been overhauled as well. Successful shots now visibly register. Some targets randomly display a white outer ring worth double points, and a rare multicolor ring marks the highest-value target on the ride… hit it, and you’ll trigger a brief bonus period that raises point values across the entire scene.
On the scoring side, harder and more distant targets are worth more, which rewards skill over position. A completion bonus tied to the number of distinct targets hit encourages riders to vary their strategy rather than camping on the same spots every run. The Galactic Hero rank is still achievable, but there’s now more than one path to get there.
Why It Matters for Repeat Riders
The old version rewarded memorization more than anything else. If you knew where the hidden high-value targets were, you could consistently post a high score regardless of how well you actually aimed. The new system shifts the advantage toward genuine accuracy, varied gameplay, and adaptability, which gives experienced riders a real reason to keep coming back.
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is open now in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom. No additional reservation beyond standard park admission is required.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Reopens May 3 – A Key Magic Kingdom Ride Update for 2026
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been closed since January 2025 for one of the most extensive refurbishments in the ride’s history. It officially returns to Frontierland on May 3, 2026, and it’s coming back with meaningful changes, not just a freshened coat of paint.
What’s New
The full track has been replaced with new rail, and the trains themselves have been refreshed. The most exciting addition is a brand-new underground sequence: Rainbow Caverns, a scene featuring illuminated phosphorescent pools surrounded by glowing stalactites and stalagmites. Disney has also teased additional enhancements that haven’t been fully detailed yet.
The Height Requirement Just Got Lower
One change that families should absolutely note: following a safety review, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad now has a 38-inch height requirement, down from 40 inches. For anyone traveling with smaller kids, that two-inch difference can genuinely change whether a child can ride, so it’s worth measuring before your trip.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is located in Frontierland at Magic Kingdom and reopens May 3, 2026.
